Nationwide — A father whose 20-month old twins tragically died after he forgot to drop them off at daycare and unintentionally left them in his car will not face charges.
Their father, who was not identified for he was not charged, had apparently been experiencing “some intense pressure” in his work at a local manufacturing plant “that really had his mind somewhere else that day,” Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said, according to People.
Later that same day, the father returned to the daycare to pick up the boys. When he was told that they weren’t there, he went to his car and found the boys lifeless in the backseat. He tried reviving them but failed.
“In his mind, he really believed he dropped the two boys off at daycare,” Lott said. “There was no doubt in his mind that he’d done that. He didn’t mean to do it. God, he didn’t mean to do it. He’s got to live with that the rest of his life.”
Lott said that when the father was interviewed after the tragedy, it was “one of the [most] heart-wrenching interviews you ever had to see. The pure emotion that came out was not something you could fake.”
Moreover, the manner of death of the twins was ruled accidental and their cause of death is listed as hyperthermia. The heat index in the car was 120 degrees at that time and “it didn’t take long” for the tragedy to happen, Richland County Coroner Nadia Rutherford said.
