San Francisco, CA — A 20-year vision will become a reality when the Bayview Senior Services celebrates the grand opening of the Dr. George W. Davis Senior Center and Residence on June 25. The new building will enhance the quality of life for underserved senior citizens in San Francisco’s Bayview Hunters Point community.

The new complex includes 121 units of low-income senior housing and a brand new senior center. The complex also includes a dining hall, beauty parlor, health and nutrition programs and more. This building was the dream of the late Dr. Davis, a longtime activist for the Bayview community. Davis was influential in developing ongoing relationships with local, state and federal agencies, plus partnerships with private developers, foundations and corporations. His charisma and humble integrity helped win support for Bayview Senior Services and the community.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony, hosted by the board of directors, will begin at 11 a.m. at 1751 Carroll Avenue, in San Francisco. Former Mayor Willie Brown, current Mayor Ed Lee, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi and other distinguished city and state officials are expected to be in attendance. The agency will offer tours of the buildings and an array of commemorative items will be available.

The project received broad support that resulted in public and private funding for the purchase of land and construction costs. Developer McCormack Baron Salazar, general contractors Nibbi/Baines Group, David Baker Architects, Michael Willis Architects, and Gelfand Partners helped make the dream come true.

“Our goals are to invest in and strengthen all aspects of the agency so that our programs and services thrive for years to come. However, we cannot do this alone. We need the continued partnership with individuals, community based organizations and corporate to sustain my husband’s vision to have a thriving, safe and secure place for Bayview seniors and people with disabilities,” shares Cathy Davis, Executive Director and widow of the late Dr. George Davis.

Major finance sponsors of the project include Citi Community Capital, Wells Fargo Bank and Wells Fargo Community Lending and Investment. The San Francisco Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure, the state Department of Housing and Community Development, the City and County of San Francisco, the Mayor’s Office of Housing & Community Development, the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee, the California Debt Limit Allocation Committee, the Housing Authority of the City & County of San Francisco and the Weinberg Foundation, were also instrumental in providing funding and grants for the project. The project is part of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Eastern Bayview Choice Neighborhood Initiative.

Under the guidance of the board of directors, Bayview Senior Services has been providing community-based comprehensive services for seniors for over 45 years. Through a network of senior centers, adult day health, case management and housing counseling, Bayview Senior Services addresses the critical needs of seniors through the context of neighborhood advocacy. Creating housing with supportive services represents the agency’s commitment to helping seniors age — in place and with dignity — in their own community.
