By Renee Hughes, Natural Health Coach

Black couple with bad breath issues

Nationwide — There is not too much worse than having that terrible dry taste in your mouth, and wondering if your significant other can smell what you feel. Chances are the answer is a big, fat, nasty YES. Its gross, but more important than that it can be a sign of illness. Chronic bad breath can be a symptom of everything from vitamin/mineral deficiencies to cancer. But let’s focus on just one common ailment that causes this symptom – Acid Reflux.

According to the NCBI, approximately 35% of African Americans have acid reflux. There is a misconception that a little heartburn after a “good” meal is normal and expected. What you may not realize is that all too common burning in your chest after eating may be a sign that you have GERD. One of the most common symptoms of GERD other than the horrible breath is heartburn/indigestion.

What you may not know is that Acid Reflux comes with a host of other symptoms including:

* A feeling of having a lump in your throat, that won’t go away
* Chronic cough
* Difficulty sleeping
* Nausea
* Burping

Try these simple steps to get relief from acid reflux:

#1 – Ditch the chomp and gulp. Take your time eating and chew your food really well before swallowing.

#2 – Limit or avoid caffeine, alcohol and carbonated beverages

#3 – Avoid overeating

#4 – Eat no later than 2-3 hours before bed

#5 – Avoid lying down immediately after meals

#6 – Try eating pineapple or taking food enzymes at the beginning of your meals

#7 – Digestive bitters 20 minutes prior to eating may also help

If you think that acid reflux or another illness could be the reason behind your breath issues, contact your healthcare provider. It may save more than just that perfect date!
