City of Baltimore Sues Trump Administration Over DEI Executive Orders

President Donald Trump

Nationwide — The city of Baltimore, along with several local organizations, is suing the Trump administration over executive orders that end diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. The lawsuit argues these orders violate the First and Fifth Amendments.

Filed in a Maryland federal court, the lawsuit includes the city of Baltimore, the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education, the American Association of University Professors, and Restaurant Opportunities Centers United as plaintiffs, according to WBAL-TV.

The lawsuit argues the orders infringe on free speech and Congress’ constitutional authority over federal funding. It also states that the executive orders are vague, creating confusion and forcing institutions and businesses to choose between adhering to their missions or losing essential funding.

“The president can have his own views about these matters. He can try to make his views into policy. But he cannot seize Congress’ power of the purse. He cannot deny due process to millions of Americans. And he cannot abridge or disrupt the free speech of those who disagree,” the lawsuit states.

Mayor Brandon Scott criticized the orders, stating they threaten vital programs and put jobs at risk. He emphasized that Baltimore will use all available legal tools to fight the executive action.
