Nationwide — Dr. Audrey Muhammad, Founder and Publisher of Virtue Today Magazine, a publication that empowers Black women worldwide, is celebrating 20 years of publication this year. Launched in 2004 as a torchlight for modest fashion, women’s empowerment, and family values, her magazine has become a cornerstone in celebrating the beauty, strength, and intellect of women worldwide. To celebrate its 20th year in publication, she has developed a new book that includes timeless tips on developing the mindset of a champion and a special tribute to Dr. Iyanla Vanzant and Mother Tynnetta Muhammad, the late wife of the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad.
Iyanla Vanzant, who is being featured as a Mother of Civilization Honoree, is an amazing writer and life coach, who has helped many through her show, “Fix My Life.” The paperback book includes exclusive profound interviews with Mother Tynnetta Muhammad and a special section honoring Iyanla Vanzant. Both women will also be honored on mothersofcivilization.org.
Virtue Today Magazine, founded by Dr. Audrey Muhammad, a trailblazer in publishing and education, has been a platform for showcasing modest fashion designers and sharing uplifting stories about health, family, and faith. She has featured renowned personalities such as Erykah Badu, Mother Tynnetta Muhammad, May May Ali, Dr. Jewell Diamond Taylor, and the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan on its covers. Dr. Muhammad has stayed true to her mission of honoring women with strength, honor, beauty, and class.
The magazine has always represented women as they should be represented…as Queens. “We wanted the magazine to be one that mothers wouldn’t mind showing their children,” said Dr. Muhammad, “We take pride in having beautifully dressed “covered girls” grace the cover. Karriem Photography, a Chicago-based company, took some of the publication’s best cover photos. “A great cover stops everyone in their tracks,” says Dr. Muhammad, who shares these tips and others in her new masterclass on “How to Brand Your Own Magazine”. Over the past 20 years, some of its most celebrated issues included:
• Black First Ladies Edition featured Mother Khadijah Farrakhan, Winnie Mandela, and Michelle Obama—praised for its celebration of Black women in leadership.
• Black Love Issue, spotlighted Nuri Muhammad and his wife, Terri—a refreshing choice in contrast to the trend of unmarried celebrity couples.
• Features on innovative modest fashion designers such as Queen Aminah, Al Nisa Designs, Belle ‘D’ Kouture, Orchid Allure, and Kameelah’s Closet — amplifying voices in the modest fashion industry.
• Independence Issue, featured artist and influencer Akilah Nehanda, who helped to highlight the magazine to a new generation.
In this new age of social media, where news is seen almost instantly, Dr. Muhammad is grateful for the genius insight of her daughter, Hasana, who helped to develop the series of Virtue Today books. Her daughter started as a model for the magazine at the age of three. Today, her daughter is the Assistant editor and helps to keep the content progressive Virtue Today Magazine’s legacy extends beyond its pages. Dr. Muhammad now offers private consultations and workshops for aspiring authors and publishers, helping others bring their creative visions to life. She credits Dr. Iman Ali Muhammad, for encouraging her to develop the magazine from a predominately black-and-white publication to an all-colored glossy magazine.
“Virtue Today Magazine has always been about more than just fashion or articles — it’s about creating a space where women can see themselves uplifted in excellence and dignity,” says Dr. Muhammad. “It’s an honor to share the stories of Black and Indigenous women, showcasing their strength and impact.”
(As Virtue Today Magazine celebrates this significant milestone, it remains committed to inspiring women for generations to come.
