Black-Owned General Contracting Company in Philadelphia Announces New CEO

Philadelphia , PA — Choates General Contracting, the 2014 Best of Philly general contracting company, has announced Tyrone Pitts, the local former Ivy League basketball star and entrepreneur, as the new CEO for the Philadelphia-based minority-owned company.

Choates General Contracting, recently completing work on the new Mormon Temple at 17th and Vine in Philadelphia, is excited to welcome Mr. Pitts to the company and looks forward to a new stage in the company’s growth. “After a lengthy search for a new CEO, we felt Mr. Pitts had a lot to offer the company and the business savy to take Choates to the next level in the booming Philadelphia construction market,” said founder Darrell Choates.

Pitts, the former University of Pennsylvania basketball star, Wharton graduate and Camden native managed the largest minority general contractor in South Jersey. In 2015, his firm, KL Pitts Construction, generated in excess of $20 million in revenue and employed more than 100 plus Camden workers while managing numerous simultaneous commercial, public and residential projects.

Recognizing the importance of education, Pitts also co-founded the Arline Institute, which provided small-group tutoring to over 6,000 low-income students attending under-performing public schools in New Jersey. He explains, “In education we have to change the dynamics of how people think and how people begin to reason.”

Choates General Contracting is the “minority” contractor that successfully fulfilled all contractual work on new The Mormons Church in Philadelphia, a $48 million project. Current Choates’ projects include The New Comcast Tower; The Philadelphia Water Department; The Philadelphia Library; Philadelphia Philly Cam; Temple University and a new development project to build 100 affordable homes for the Philadelphia community.

Choates has created 100 new jobs in Philadelphia, and is looking forward to training and hiring more workers. In the next two years, Choates plans to hire another 1400 community members with the creation of “Gateway 2135: The People’s Union”, which was announced in September of this year. Choates has also partnered with the Philadelphia Job Corps and with On the Job Training Program (OJT) for city-wide youth development and has partnered with 100 Pastors in Philadelphia to prevent violence and create jobs within the community.
