Principal of High School in Florida Arrested for DUI and Drug Possession

Scott Hazlett

Nationwide — Scott Hazlett, a high school principal from Tampa, Florida, was recently arrested for DUI and cocaine possession just a year after he made headlines for saving a student’s life. He is now on leave from Leto High School.

According to WLBT, Temple Terrace police stopped Hazlett early Saturday morning during a routine speed check. Officers said he was driving 15 miles over the limit and showed clear signs of impairment.

Hazlett reportedly failed a field sobriety test. During the arrest, police searched his vehicle and found cocaine.

The incident shocked many in the community. Linda Unfried, a local anti-drunk driving advocate, said police may have prevented a tragedy. She has been campaigning against impaired driving in Hillsborough County for decades.

“Thank God that Temple Terrace police officers stopped him, saved him from killing someone, killing himself,” Unfried said.

Just a month earlier, Hillsborough County Public Schools had praised Hazlett for becoming principal of Leto High School. His promotion came after years of service, including an incident where he helped save a student.

Unfried expressed disappointment, saying Hazlett should have set an example. “We all have choices. He made a really, really bad choice,” she added.

School officials released a statement following the arrest. “These allegations are deeply concerning, and we appreciate the prompt response from law enforcement.” They confirmed Hazlett has been placed on administrative leave.

The investigation is ongoing.
