Body of Black Mom of 6 Children Finally Found a Year After She Was Last Seen

Tameika Watley

Nationwide — Tameika Watley, an African American mother of six from Lake Charles, Louisiana, has been found dead more than a year after she disappeared. Authorities confirmed her remains were discovered in the woods near the city of Vinton earlier this summer.

According to WLBT, her family had reported her missing in June 2024, and they spent the past year searching for answers. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office said a passerby came across human remains on June 16 near Gum Gully off U.S. 90.

Last week, the Louisiana State University Forensic Anthropology and Computer Enhancement Services Lab confirmed the remains belonged to Watley. The news brought closure but also deep grief to her family, who had been holding on to hope.

Relatives said the last time they heard from Watley was on June 5, 2024. Her mother, Anita Watley, recalled speaking with her that day. She described it as a memory that still feels fresh and painful.

“I know I am the last one who spoke with her. It hit me kind of hard today, but I’m alright, I just thank God because if it weren’t for God, I don’t know what I would do. I try to stay prayed up,” Anita said earlier this year.

Her family never stopped looking for answers, believing someone in the community might know more about her disappearance. They have now launched a GoFundMe to help cover funeral expenses and support her six children. It has so far raised over $3,000.

Detectives previously stated they found no evidence that foul play was involved in the body that was found. Authorities continue to ask anyone with information about the case to come forward.
