Black Student Arrested and Then Expelled For Mocking Charlie Kirk at a Candlelight Vigil

Camryn Giselle Booker

Nationwide — Camryn Giselle Booker, an 18-year-old African American student at Texas Tech University, was arrested and expelled after she mocked Charlie Kirk’s death during a campus vigil. The incident, caught in a now-viral video, also led to assault charges.

According to Fox 4 News, Booker was caught on video in the university’s free speech area arguing with another person. At one point, she appeared to flick the man’s baseball cap. Authorities believe this action is what triggered the assault charge.

The Lubbock County Assistant District Attorney confirmed that Booker was arrested and later released on bond. Court records listed her bond at $200, though no further details about the case were released.

The video quickly spread across social media and drew responses from state leaders. Texas Governor Greg Abbott posted on X that Booker “definitely picked the wrong school to taunt the death of Charlie Kirk.” His post gained wide attention online.

Texas Tech University later announced that Booker was no longer enrolled. In a statement, the school said behavior that “denigrates victims of violence” does not reflect its values. Officials added that all student conduct matters are handled according to policy and federal law.

Board of Regents Chairman Cody Campbell echoed Abbott’s comments, reposting the governor’s message and reaffirming the university’s stance. He said the university was “proud of our values and are not afraid to stand up for them.”
