Nationwide — Landon Daesch, a 17-year-old from St. Louis, Missouri, finally received a new heart after months of waiting. His family celebrated the transplant, but complications soon placed him back on life support as his recovery remains uncertain.
Less than two days after being placed on the transplant list, doctors at St. Louis Children’s Hospital told his family a heart was available. The surgery went ahead, and at first, the new heart beat steadily.
His mother, Krista Mercille, shared her relief online, writing, “All praise and glory to Jesus, the Giver of Life!” But hours later, her updates shifted. Landon was still on life support, and doctors could not explain why the new heart was not working as expected.
“It’s a scary situation right now,” she told 11Alive.
Landon’s health struggles began in February. For months, his family prayed for healing while moving in and out of hospitals. Though some progress came, doctors eventually decided the damage was too severe, and a transplant was unavoidable.
The sudden turn of events stunned those close to him. Family friend Savannah Nair drove nine hours to celebrate the transplant with them but arrived to find Landon in critical condition.
“What if it was one of mine ?”Nair said. “I wouldn’t even know how to walk what they (Landon’s parent) are walking through right now. Seeing Landon where he is right now, I see my kid’s face. It’s that feeling that you want to wake up from this nightmare.”
His mother has been candid about the toll it has taken. “As a mom, it’s traumatizing to see him like that again,” she said through tears. Still, she continues to share updates with thousands of followers who have been following Landon’s journey online.
Alongside the emotional strain, the family faces financial hardship. A GoFundMe campaign has raised nearly $15,000 to help cover medical costs. Friends, relatives, and strangers across the country have joined in prayer and support.
Before his surgery, Landon expressed his trust in God. “God is going to get me through this,” he told his mom. His words and his story have sparked hope and inspired many who now follow his progress closely.
For now, Landon’s family stands by his side, asking for continued prayers and strength as they face the next steps in his fight.
