28-Year-Old Woman Arrested for Fatally Stabbing Her 81-Year-Old Grandmother

Breante Thomas

Nationwide — Breante Thomas, a 28-year-old African American woman from Fort Washington, Maryland, has been arrested after police said she fatally stabbed her 81-year-old grandmother and injured another family member during an attack last weekend.

According to Fox 5 DC, the incident occurred on Sunday, September 14, at a home on Bonhill Drive in Fort Washington. Officers responded to a welfare check around 2 p.m. and found Helen Thomas with multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said another family member, a man whose name has not been released, was also stabbed. He was taken to the hospital by paramedics and remains in critical but stable condition.

After three days of searching, authorities located Thomas in Waldorf on Thursday and took her into custody. Investigators identified her as the main suspect in both assaults.

Thomas has been charged with first- and second-degree murder in connection with her grandmother’s death, as well as attempted murder for the attack on the second victim. Officials said more charges could follow.

The investigation is ongoing as detectives continue to look into the events that led to the fatal stabbing inside the family’s Fort Washington home.
