Nationwide — Kyren Lacy, an African American football player at Louisiana State University who was accused of causing a deadly crash in 2024, appears to have been wrongly blamed after new footage showed he was far behind the collision site. Months after his arrest, Lacy tragically died by apparent suicide.
According to WLBT, a newly released video shows Lacy’s vehicle trailing 72 yards behind the two cars that crashed in December 2024. The footage contradicts early reports claiming he was driving recklessly and weaving ahead of the vehicles before the crash.
The new evidence challenges investigators’ original conclusions and raises questions about why Lacy faced criminal charges. His attorney, Matthew Ory, said from the beginning that there was no proof Lacy caused the crash that killed 78-year-old Herman Hall.
Ory also cited part of the crash report, which stated that “the evidence submitted in the crash report does not support that Kyren Lacy should have known that his actions were the cause of the crash that happened approximately 72 yards in front of him.”
Lacy was arrested in January 2025 and booked into the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex on charges of negligent homicide, reckless operation, and hit-and-run with serious injury or death. He was released on a $151,000 bond while awaiting a grand jury hearing.
In April 2025, just two days before that hearing, the 24-year-old died by apparent suicide after an argument with a family member and a police chase.
Following the release of the new video, Louisiana State Police maintained that their initial findings were based on the evidence available at the time. “As with all investigations leading to arrest, the subjects of the investigation are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law,” the agency said.
