Nationwide — Jackie Salvatore, a native of New York, has been sworn in as Columbia County’s sheriff, becoming the first Black woman to ever be elected to the position in the state. She brings more than 30 years of law enforcement experience and plans to focus on community safety and fairness.
Her oath of office was administered by NYS Assemblymember Didi Barrett in a ceremony attended by family, county officials, and law enforcement colleagues. Salvatore’s swearing-in represents a historic milestone for both Columbia County and New York State.
Salvatore spent 28 years with the New York State Police and served four years as Columbia County’s undersheriff, according to CBS 6. Her decades-long career has given her the experience and leadership skills she intends to bring to her new role.
“Being elected as Columbia County Sheriff is a profound responsibility and an honor that I respect and hold dear,” Salvatore said. “I am deeply grateful for your confidence in my leadership, and I pledge to continue earning that trust every day.”
Salvatore outlined her priorities as public safety, combating the opioid crisis, and ensuring fairness in the criminal justice system. She will serve a four-year term, which runs through December 2029, with a focus on transparency and accountability in every decision.
