Nationwide — Sports analyst Stephen A. Smith says he is seriously thinking about running for president in 2028, noting that people have encouraged him to consider it. He also expressed excitement at the idea of debating the political establishment on the campaign stage.
Smith, known for his long career at ESPN and outspoken political commentary, told ABC News Live Prime with Linsey Davis that while he enjoys his current work and has no desire to be a politician, he feels a responsibility to consider the opportunity. “With tremendous power comes tremendous responsibility,” he said, according to The Grio.
He explained that many people have approached him, telling him he could have a real chance of winning. Even his pastor urged him not to dismiss the idea. Smith noted that any official campaign filing would happen no earlier than 2027, leaving him time to weigh the decision carefully.
If he does run, Smith said he looks forward to debating politicians and holding them accountable for what he sees as mistakes harming the country.
“I’m dead serious about wanting to go up against those politicians, not be a politician, but wanting to go up against them on a debate stage to call out what they have done to our country, to harm us,” he said. “It would be my pleasure.”
During the interview, Smith addressed past critiques of some Black women in politics, including U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett. While apologizing for any offense, he maintained that his comments focused on actions he felt did not serve constituents. He also responded to critics like Joy Reid, emphasizing that public commentary needs to be measured to have a lasting impact.
Smith concluded that he is carefully considering the possibility and watching how things unfold, saying he doesn’t rule anything out.
