Young Black Siblings Tragically Die in Mobile Home Fire in Georgia

Maliyah Russell and Christian Jackson

Nationwide — Maliyah Russell, a 4-year-old girl, and her 7-year-old brother, Christian Jackson, who are from Sandersville, Georgia, died early Saturday morning when a mobile home fire broke out. Emergency crews rushed to the scene but could not save the children.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says deputies and firefighters responded to the home on Oaks Meadows Circle around 4:30 a.m. Sheriff Joel Cochran confirmed that both children died in the blaze, as reported by Action News 5. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and the Georgia Fire Marshal’s Office is helping with the investigation.

Family members remembered Christian as a loving and protective older brother. Their grandmother said he “was the best big brother ever, always looking out for his little sister.” She described him as a sweet second-grader with a bright smile who loved giving hugs and telling everyone he loved them.

Maliyah was just as cherished. Her grandmother called her a “sweetheart with a twist of feisty.” A Head Start student, Maliyah, loved dancing and singing, especially her favorite song, “Yes, Jesus Loves Me.” She could switch from affectionate to playful in moments, leaving those around her smiling.

Ridge Road Primary School shared its grief over Christian’s death. “Christian is known for being extremely smart with a smile that always lit up the room. Our hearts are heavy for family, friends, teachers, classmates and our entire WACO community,” the school said. Counselors and support staff will be at the school to help students cope.

Brentwood School, where Maliyah attended Washington County Head Start Pre-K, also extended condolences. “Our hearts are heavy for their family and loved ones during this unimaginable time. We pray for comfort, peace, and healing for all who are grieving,” the school said, honoring both children and the wider school community.

Family, neighbors, and school officials continue to mourn, sharing memories of Christian and Maliyah and celebrating the joy the siblings brought to everyone around them.
