Nationwide — Singer Brandy has revealed in her book Phases: A Memoir that she once had a secret romantic relationship with Boyz II Men singer Wanya Morris while she was a teenager. She says the relationship began when she was 16 and Morris was in his early 20s, and she now describes parts of it as manipulation.
In the book, Brandy recalls first meeting Morris during the recording of their 1994 collaboration “Brokenhearted.” She says their friendship quickly shifted into a private relationship that they kept hidden, especially from her parents, due to her age and their public careers.
According to People, Brandy writes that both of them agreed to act as if they would wait until she turned 18 before anything became official. She also describes how the secrecy shaped the relationship and added pressure to maintain appearances in public.
She further shares that the relationship became more serious and included intimate moments, including her losing her virginity to Morris. Brandy also says he sometimes compared her to other R&B artists, including Mariah Carey, and that communication between them could feel controlled, with her needing to page him before speaking.
Brandy says the relationship eventually ended after she discovered Morris was unfaithful. She also claims that, over the years, Morris has described their past as a harmless teenage crush, something she strongly disputes.
In Phases, Brandy says she is now speaking openly to reclaim her perspective on the experience. “I was a child. And he was an adult. And it’s time the world understood the difference,” she writes. Representatives for Morris did not respond to requests for comment. The memoir Phases is now available through major retailers.
