Black Vice Mayor Preparing to Launch a Campaign for Congress Found Dead in Home

Nancy Metayer Bowen and her husband Stephen Bowen

Nationwide — Nancy Metayer Bowen, an African American politician from Coral Springs, Florida, was found dead inside her home during a wellness check. Police arrested her husband, Stephen Bowen, and are investigating the case as a possible domestic violence-related death.

According to TMZ, police said officers went to Bowen’s home on Wednesday morning after concerns prompted a welfare check. When they arrived, they found her unresponsive inside the residence. She served as both a city commissioner and vice mayor.

Authorities confirmed that Stephen was taken into custody following the discovery. Investigators said they are treating the case as domestic violence-related and noted that no other suspects are being sought.

Florida Rep. Jared Moskowitz said Nancy was preparing to launch a campaign for Congress. According to the Miami Herald, she was expected to formally announce her candidacy on Thursday. She planned to enter the Democratic primary for the seat held by Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who has been indicted over alleged misuse of disaster relief funds connected to her campaign.

Bowen had built a political career in Coral Springs over several years. She was elected in 2020 as the city’s first Black and Haitian American woman commissioner. She won reelection in 2024 and began her second term as vice mayor in November 2025.
