Black Family Grieves 5-Year-Old Boy Fatally Stabbed by His 11-Year-Old Brother

Elias Reliford

Nationwide — Elias Reliford, a 5-year-old African American boy from Centennial, Colorado, was killed by his 11-year-old brother while he napped after school. The tragedy shocked their family and left the community struggling to understand how it happened.

The siblings had returned home from school when the incident occurred on an ordinary afternoon. Family members said the older brother had been asked to do chores while Elias rested in another room.

Authorities said the younger child was fatally harmed during that time. The exact circumstances of his death have not been released because both children are minors.

According to the New York Post, the 11-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held at the Marvin W. Foote Youth Services Center. Officials have not shared further details as the investigation remains limited due to the age of those involved.

Elias’ great-aunt, Dawn Myles, described the act as “the most horrendous act that a human could commit on another human, especially a child.” She recalled that the two brothers were close, often playing together and riding scooters through the neighborhood.

“We would have never imagined the big brother that he was would hurt Elias,” Myles added.

After the tragedy, the family packed up their Centennial home and is moving between hotels while figuring out their next steps. Their other 12-year-old sibling is staying with relatives in Louisiana. Myles said the family is “not well,” facing anger, grief, and countless questions.

Through it all, the aunt wants Elias to be remembered for his joy and energy. She said he loved being outside, enjoyed fire trucks, and often played pranks. “I would want to see him smile, ride his scooter,” she said. “He was a happy kindergartner. He was a happy kid.”
