Nationwide — Wacinque Amistad Kaizen BeMende, a respected African American financial strategist, entrepreneur, educator, and poverty reduction advocate, is helping to break the cycle of poverty by educating unbanked, underbanked, disabled, and low-income Americans about powerful financial programs that can help families build long-term wealth and financial security. Through his community outreach and financial literacy efforts, he is encouraging more Americans to take advantage of savings and retirement programs that many people either do not fully understand or have never heard of.
BeMende has established himself as a recognized leader in financial empowerment and community development. He previously served as President of the organizing board for Blount United, a Community Development Financial Institution initiative in Tennessee designed to provide matched savings accounts to underserved residents. He also helped develop a Healthy Marriage Fatherhood program and served as a senior instructor and leadership development professional who helped create the first resident Non-Commissioned Officer leadership development course in the history of the United States Air Force Reserve. In addition, he has served as Chief Poverty Consultant for KRSI-Las Cruces/El Paso and co-founded KRSI-Detroit.
According to BeMende, one of the biggest reasons many families remain trapped in poverty is that they were never taught how to properly save, invest, or prepare financially for the future. He believes financial education must begin early and that underserved communities deserve greater access to wealth-building tools that can create generational change.
As part of his national financial literacy initiative, BeMende is advocating for three important programs that can help families, workers, and disabled individuals improve their long-term financial outlook:
• 530 Alpha Savings Accounts for Kids: These programs encourage families to begin saving for children at an early age, helping prepare them for future educational opportunities, entrepreneurship, homeownership, and financial independence. BeMende says early financial education and structured savings habits can significantly improve a child’s long-term economic future.
• ABLE Accounts for Disabled Individuals: ABLE Accounts are tax-advantaged savings accounts designed for eligible individuals with disabilities. The accounts allow people to save money for housing, healthcare, education, transportation, and other qualified expenses without jeopardizing important government benefits such as Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income. Earnings may also grow tax-free when used for qualified expenses.
• NYRA Retirement Solutions for Employees Without Retirement Plans: Millions of Americans work for employers that do not offer retirement plans such as 401(k)s or pensions. BeMende is encouraging workers to explore independent retirement savings options that can help them build long-term financial stability and avoid financial hardship later in life.
BeMende says these programs are especially important for African Americans, working-class families, people with disabilities, and others who have historically had limited access to traditional banking systems and wealth-building opportunities. He believes greater awareness and education about these programs can help families become more financially independent and better prepared for future emergencies and economic uncertainty.
“Far too many people are struggling financially simply because nobody ever taught them how to build a strong financial foundation,” said BeMende. “Financial literacy can change lives, strengthen families, and create opportunities that can impact future generations.”
Supporters say his work continues to gain attention among advocates focused on poverty reduction, economic empowerment, and financial inclusion. Through his outreach efforts, he hopes to inspire more families to save for their children, help more disabled individuals protect and grow their finances, and encourage workers without retirement plans to begin preparing for their futures before it is too late.
