Black Dad, His Son, and Son’s Girlfriend Killed After Large Tree Falls on Their Car Days After Graduation

James K. Walker, Kencerio Walker, and Nykeria Johnson

Nationwide — James K. Walker, a 65-year-old African American father from Swainsboro, Georgia, his son Kencerio, and his son’s girlfriend Nykeria Johnson died when a large tree fell onto their car. They had just graduated days earlier.

The crash happened along Georgia’s Highway 56 South in Burke County when a large tree suddenly toppled and struck a blue Ford Taurus carrying the three. Emergency responders arrived and found all three dead inside the vehicle. A second car, a Jeep Cherokee, was also hit by the falling tree. The driver, an 18-year-old man, survived with minor injuries.

According to the New York Post, the three had recently celebrated graduating from Swainsboro High School. Videos from the ceremony showed Kencerio embracing his father on the football field after receiving his diploma. James Walker, who once worked at the school, held balloons as he hugged his son and Nykeria during the celebration.

Family and friends said Kencerio stayed in touch after graduation and told loved ones he cared about them. Community members and church leaders remembered him as someone who led by example and carried himself as a quiet leader among his peers.

James Walker was previously employed at Emanuel Medical Center and was described by former co-workers as steady, kind, and always positive. Many said he often acted like a father figure to people around him and brought a calm presence wherever he worked.

Local officials and community leaders responded with grief after the incident. School officials called the loss devastating for students and staff. Statesboro Mayor Jonathan McCollar said the tragedy was heartbreaking and reflected how quickly life can change for families across Southeast Georgia.

A vigil was later held where community members gathered to honor Kencerio Walker and Nykeria Johnson and support the grieving family.
