Nationwide — Clifton Davis shares how he stays sharp and healthy at 80 while reflecting on his long career and role in Beyond the Gates. He credits work, routine, and family support for helping him maintain health and focus over the years. Clifton, who has spent decades on stage and screen, says aging “snuck up” on him while he stayed focused on his career.
“First of all, forget that you’re 80. Don’t think about it. It snuck up on me actually. I just keep working [and] keep my mind working,” he told People. “And I try to stay active. I fight those things that come on normally because you’ve lived 80 years and by God’s grace, I’m still hanging in there.”
He highlights the importance of his home life in maintaining balance. Davis credits his wife for helping him stay on track with his health, including managing medication and daily care. He describes this support as a steady part of his routine that helps him stay grounded.
On screen, Davis plays Vernon Dupree in Beyond the Gates, a retired senator and family patriarch. After more than 350 episodes, he says the role has continued to teach him new lessons, especially about relationships and emotional connection. He points to Vernon’s bond with Anita as a complex and meaningful partnership shaped by shared perspectives and deep understanding.
Davis says the character has allowed him to explore a type of emotional intimacy he has not experienced in previous roles. He adds that the storyline has expanded how he views love, both on and off screen. Through the role, he continues to find new ways to approach performance and storytelling.
Outside of acting, Davis says he wants his legacy to reflect his faith, his love for family, and his respect for others. He explains that he tries to carry those values into every character he plays, even when the role differs from his personal beliefs. This approach, he says, helps him stay authentic in his work.
He also reflects on the success of Beyond the Gates, saying he did not expect it to become such a hit. Davis credits the cast and crew for their commitment and teamwork, noting the show’s diversity and strong collaboration. He adds that the production’s effort helped secure its continued run on CBS.
