Nationwide — Talecka C. Brown, an African American mother from Seat Pleasant, Maryland who shot her 13-year-old daughter in 2024, has received a 50-year prison sentence after a case involving child abuse and attempted murder charges. The shooting followed a heated argument inside their home.
According to Fox 5 DC, the incident took place in September 2024 at the family’s residence in Seat Pleasant, Maryland. Court records show Brown and her daughter got into an argument that quickly escalated inside the home.
As the argument continued, the teen tried to move away from the confrontation and headed toward a staircase. Prosecutors said Brown fired a single shot as the girl attempted to leave the area.
The bullet struck the teenager in the back of the neck. She fell at the bottom of the stairs and became unable to move after being hit.
Investigators said Brown then instructed her daughter to claim that an intruder had carried out the shooting. That version of events was later challenged by evidence gathered during the investigation.
Medical reports confirmed the teen suffered a severe spinal injury. Bullet fragments were found near her shoulder and abdomen, and she required emergency surgery along with a chest tube to assist her breathing.
Authorities said the girl survived but faced a long and difficult recovery due to the extent of her injuries. The case progressed through the courts after investigators reviewed the evidence and circumstances of the shooting.
“It is unimaginable that a mother would turn on her own child in such a violent way,” said Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Tara H. Jackson. “A mother has a duty to love, protect and nurture her child, not cause them harm.”
Brown was convicted of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree child abuse, first-degree assault, and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. She will serve her 50-year sentence in a Maryland state prison. Prince George’s County prosecutors said the sentence reflects the seriousness of the case.
