Obama Presidential Center Opens Restaurant Dedicated to Late White House Chef, Tafari Campbell

Tafari Campbell

Nationwide — Tafari Campbell, a chef who worked for the Obamas before his sudden death in 2023, is being honored at the Obama Presidential Center restaurant opening in Chicago, Illinois. The tribute highlights his work as White House chef and his lasting connection to the Obama family.

At the heart of the campus is Tafari’s Kitchen, a restaurant that connects food with personal memories from the Obama family’s White House years. The menu features dishes like “Tafari’s Famous Ribs,” “Obama Family Chili,” and “Mrs. Robinson’s Red Rice,” each tied to flavors and moments from that period.

According to People, the restaurant is part of the larger Obama Presidential Center, which has already opened on Chicago’s South Side. The center was created to reflect the legacy of Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, using exhibits and spaces drawn from their time in the White House.

Inside the center, visitors can also find a replica of the Oval Office and clothing worn by Michelle Obama at major state events. These displays sit alongside more personal spaces, including Tafari’s Kitchen, which highlights everyday life behind the public image of the presidency.

Tafari worked in the White House kitchen before later becoming the Obama family’s personal chef. He was once featured in a White House video preparing beer using honey collected from Michelle Obama’s beehives.

He died in 2023 in an accidental drowning while paddleboarding near the Obamas’ home in Martha’s Vineyard. The Obamas were not present at the time, and authorities later confirmed the incident as an accident.

The Obama Center website remembers him as warm, generous, and deeply talented, noting how he used food to bring people together. Barack Obama also paid tribute, saying Campbell showed strong character and used his gifts to create joy and connection.

After his death, the Obamas described him as part of their family and shared how deeply they felt the loss. His legacy now continues through Tafari’s Kitchen, which carries his name and influence into the public space of the Obama Presidential Center.
