Nationwide — John Adesoye, a 64-year-old Black father of 5 from the UK, achieved a major career milestone after graduating as a registered nurse. He returned to college later in life and studied alongside his son while building a new future in healthcare.
He completed a nurse degree apprenticeship at the University of the West of England in Bristol and celebrated his graduation on July 15, according to People. His journey came after years of training while balancing work and family responsibilities.
Before becoming a healthcare worker, Adesoye worked as an electronics technician. He grew up in Nigeria and developed a passion for electronics as a child after becoming fascinated by radios and how they worked.
In 2013, Adesoye decided to change careers and began working as a healthcare assistant at Southmead Hospital. He later completed a nursing associate course before continuing his studies and earning his nursing degree.
While attending the university, Adesoye shared the experience with his son, Daniel, who was also studying there in the creative music technology program. He attended classes one day a week and spent the rest of his time training at Southmead Hospital.
Throughout his healthcare career, Adesoye worked in several areas of the hospital, including emergency care, cardiology, orthopedics, and intensive care. After graduating, he accepted a nursing role at Southmead and is considering pursuing a master’s degree in the future.
His course leaders, Jacqui Caskey and Caroline Bromwich, praised Adesoye for his dedication and said his journey showed how commitment and perseverance can help people reach their goals.
Adesoye encouraged other adults who are considering returning to school not to let age stop them. He said his own experience showed that people can achieve more than they often believe possible.
