Nationwide — Theresa Jones, a 61-year-old African American grandmother from Fullerton, California, was found dead days after her family reported her missing when she failed to pick up her grandchild. Her son, Emmanuel Wesley, now faces murder charges in connection with her death.
Jones was reported missing on July 7 after she stopped responding to phone calls and did not arrive to pick up her grandchild. Her family became concerned and contacted authorities after they could not reach her.
Authorities later found Jones’ body on July 11 inside her car in the parking lot of a local church. She was found in the passenger seat of the vehicle, according to People.
Investigators said Jones was allegedly shot on July 4 outside the Fullerton Police Department. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Jones arriving at the police station before a man believed to be Wesley moved her from the driver’s seat to the passenger seat and drove away in the car.
Prosecutors said Jones suffered two gunshot wounds to her back. Authorities have not revealed a possible motive behind the alleged killing.
Wesley, 23, was arrested and charged with felony murder and a firearm enhancement for allegedly causing great bodily injury or death. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Loved ones remembered Jones as a loving mother and grandmother who brought happiness to those around her. They described her as smart, funny, and full of energy, even giving her the nickname “Cardi B” because of her lively personality.
A GoFundMe fundraiser was created to support Jones’ family as they grieve her death and navigate the aftermath of the case. It has so far raised over $2,500.
