Nationwide — Brittany McLean, a 36-year-old African American woman from Jacksonville, Florida, was arrested and charged with murder after she reportedly fatally stabbed another woman outside a convenience store. The victim, 41-year-old Yolanda Haynes, died after suffering severe injuries during the July 23 attack, but the family has publicly announced that they have forgiven her.
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officers arrived at the scene after receiving reports of a stabbing and found Haynes suffering from serious injuries. Paramedics took her to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Investigators quickly identified McLean as the suspect in the attack. Officers initially arrested her on charges of aggravated battery and tampering with evidence while homicide detectives continued reviewing the case.
After examining McLean’s statement, witness accounts, and physical evidence, detectives determined there was enough probable cause to charge her with murder. Authorities arrested McLean on July 24, and she remains held at the Duval County jail as she awaits her court appearance.
Haynes’ family described her as a caring person who was loved by many people in her community. Her sister, Sheila Dixon Williams, said Haynes always showed kindness and cared deeply for her family.
“Yolanda was more than what she lost her life for,” Williams told News4JAX. “She was loving, caring, she loved her family, especially her nieces and nephews. She loved people who didn’t even love her.”
Haynes’ niece, Miracle Vickers, said she had seen her aunt only hours before the stabbing. She said she was shocked when she received the news that Haynes had died.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office expressed support for Haynes’ loved ones and said detectives will continue investigating the case. McLean remains in custody as she waits for further court proceedings.
