The Unfiltered World with P.A. Explores Black History, Culture, and the African Diaspora Across the Globe
Nationwide — Veteran broadcaster, journalist, world traveler, and Ghanaian Developmental Chief Paul Allen Billings is bringing untold stories of Black history and culture to audiences worldwide through his growing documentary channel, The Unfiltered World with P.A. The series takes viewers beyond beaches, resorts, and traditional tourist attractions to explore the history, people, traditions, and cultural connections that shape destinations around the world.
Since launching on YouTube in January 2026, The Unfiltered World with P.A. has attracted more than 33,000 subscribers, with viewers responding to its honest storytelling and focus on the global African Diaspora. “Anyone can show you a beautiful beach,” Billings said. “I want to introduce viewers to the people, the history, the culture, and the stories that explain why a place matters.”
Inspired by Dr. Runoko Rashidi
Billings credits the late historian, author, anthropologist, and world traveler Dr. Runoko Rashidi as one of the primary inspirations behind the creation of the documentary series. Long before YouTube and social media made global storytelling widely accessible, Rashidi traveled the world documenting and presenting evidence of the African presence in Asia, Europe, the Pacific, the Americas, and other regions.
“Dr. Runoko Rashidi opened my mind to the reality that African people and our descendants are almost everywhere,” Billings said. “His presentations about the African presence around the world existed long before YouTube. He helped me understand that our history is global and that there are stories waiting to be uncovered nearly everywhere we travel.” That influence is reflected throughout The Unfiltered World with P.A., which examines how African people, traditions, spirituality, music, food, resistance, and creativity have helped shape countries around the world.
Billings said the series is not an attempt to recreate Rashidi’s work, but rather to continue encouraging audiences to investigate the global history and influence of African people. “Dr. Rashidi planted seeds in the minds of people like me,” he said. “The Unfiltered World is one way I can honor that inspiration by traveling, listening to local voices, and sharing what I learn with a new generation.”
A Different Kind of Travel Show
Unlike traditional travel programs that focus primarily on luxury accommodations, sightseeing, and entertainment, The Unfiltered World with P.A. combines journalism, history, travel, and cultural storytelling. Each documentary features conversations with historians, educators, tour guides, community leaders, artists, musicians, business owners, and everyday residents who provide authentic perspectives about their countries and communities.
Rather than depending only on narration, Billings allows local people to explain their own history and experiences in their own voices.
Recent episodes have explored:
• The hidden Black history of Panama and the role people of African descent played in shaping the country.
• The African roots of Salvador, Brazil, and the survival of Afro-Brazilian culture, religion, food, and traditions.
• The music, dance, resistance, and Black identity found throughout Rio de Janeiro.
• Race and identity across Latin America and the Caribbean.
• Cuba through multiple installments examining Afro-Cuban history, Yoruba spirituality, race, culture, everyday life, and the political and economic realities of the island through the voices of Cubans themselves.
The series also examines difficult subjects, including slavery, colonialism, racism, colorism, economic inequality, political representation, cultural erasure, and the continued struggle of Black communities to preserve their history.
Thirty-Eight Countries and Counting
Billings has traveled to 38 countries, documenting communities across Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, and other parts of the world. His travels are driven by a mission to help audiences better understand the connections shared by people of African descent, regardless of nationality or language. “Black history did not begin or end within the borders of the United States,” he said. “When you travel, you begin to understand how connected we truly are. You recognize familiar food, music, spirituality, family traditions, and ways of life in places thousands of miles apart.”
Through the series, Billings hopes to inspire more African Americans to travel internationally, explore their heritage, and build meaningful relationships with communities throughout the African Diaspora. “I want our viewers to see the world for themselves,” he said. “I also want them to understand that we are not strangers in many of these places. Our history and our influence are already there.”
From Broadcasting to Global Documentary Storytelling
Billings brings decades of broadcasting and community media experience to the project. As a veteran radio executive and journalist, he has spent much of his career covering issues affecting underserved communities and creating platforms where local voices can be heard. That same approach now guides his international documentary work.
“The microphone may be in a different country, but the mission is still the same,” Billings said. “It is about allowing people to tell their stories, asking questions that are often overlooked, and giving audiences information they may not receive from traditional media.” The program’s independent format allows Billings to approach each destination without being restricted by the conventional structure of commercial travel television. The result is a series that feels personal, educational, and unfiltered.
More Than Entertainment
The growth of The Unfiltered World with P.A. also supports educational and community development efforts in Ghana. Revenue generated through the YouTube channel helps support projects including the Bernice Mayes Community Library, which provides books, educational resources, and access to a computer lab, and the Mae Harley Empowerment Academy, a vocational education initiative created to expand opportunities for young people.
Billings serves as a Developmental Chief in Ghana under the name Nana Nyansa II, where his work focuses on education, youth development, and strengthening the community. “The channel is about more than views and subscribers,” he said. “The goal is to build something that educates people through our documentaries while also creating real opportunities for communities.”
Helping African American Youth Experience Africa
Billings is also the creator of the independent Kids Free Trip to Africa program, which he launched in 2017. Since its creation, the program has taken more than 55 African American children to Africa at no cost to their families, providing young people with firsthand exposure to African history, culture, traditions, and daily life. For many participants, the program provides their first international travel experience and their first opportunity to personally connect with the African continent.
“There is something powerful about a Black child standing on African soil and understanding that Africa is not simply something they read about in a textbook,” Billings said. “They get to meet people, experience the culture, see the history, and understand that Africa is also part of their story.” The program reflects the same mission that guides The Unfiltered World with P.A.: using travel as a tool for education, cultural understanding, and personal transformation.
A Growing Global Audience
Since its debut, The Unfiltered World with P.A. has developed a growing audience of viewers interested in meaningful travel content, Black history, African culture, and the African Diaspora. Episodes combine cinematic footage, historical context, candid interviews, street-level conversations, and Billings’ personal observations as he explores each destination.
The channel has attracted viewers from the United States and around the world who say the documentaries have introduced them to histories and communities they had never previously seen represented in mainstream travel programming. Billings believes the response demonstrates that audiences are looking for more than traditional tourism content. “People want beautiful images, but they also want meaning,” he said. “They want to understand who built these cities, where the music came from, how communities survived, and what local people think about their own history.”
Continuing the Journey
With the Cuba installments now released, The Unfiltered World with P.A. is continuing its journey across the African Diaspora, introducing audiences to additional destinations and communities throughout Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and beyond. Upcoming documentaries will continue highlighting the voices of historians, cultural leaders, local residents, entrepreneurs, and communities whose stories deserve wider recognition.
As the channel grows, Billings plans to expand the series while remaining committed to the approach that has defined The Unfiltered World with P.A. from the beginning: traveling beyond the tourist experience and allowing local people to help tell the story of their own history and culture. “This journey has confirmed what Dr. Runoko Rashidi helped many of us understand years ago,” Billings said. “African people have had a presence and an impact across this entire world. We are almost everywhere, and our stories deserve to be seen, heard, and remembered.”

Paul Allen Billings is a veteran broadcaster, journalist, documentary host, community leader, and world traveler. He is the creator and host of The Unfiltered World with P.A., an independent travel documentary series highlighting Black history, global cultures, and the African Diaspora. He is also the founder of WUVS 103.7 The Beat, an FM radio station serving the Muskegon area, and has been instrumental in helping secure FM radio licenses in St. Louis, Missouri; Orlando, Florida; Kansas City, Missouri; and Grand Rapids, Michigan.
