Woman Gets 40 Years in Prison for Starving and Torturing Her Adopted Son For Years

Chloe Lyn Jackson-Jones

Nationwide — Chloe Lyn Jackson-Jones, a 42-year-old African American woman from Newnan, Georgia, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to abusing and torturing her adopted son for years. The case came to light in July 2023, when the 11-year-old escaped from a locked room in her home and sought help from a neighbor. Prosecutors said the boy endured severe abuse, including starvation, physical violence, and confinement.

The child escaped on July 5, 2023, by clawing through the drywall of a closet where Jackson-Jones had locked him inside. He then jumped out of a second-story window and walked down the street until a neighbor spotted him. When the boy told the resident he was hungry, the neighbor called 911 and offered help. He weighed just 61 pounds at the time. Responding officers launched an investigation, and the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services took him into protective custody.

According to 11Alive, Jackson-Jones adopted the boy in May 2019, when he was 8 years old. Prosecutors said she began isolating him after removing him from public school in 2020 and switching him to virtual learning. After more than a year, she described his education as homeschooling. Investigators later uncovered photos and videos on her phone that prosecutors said documented years of mistreatment.

The evidence allegedly showed the boy being deprived of food, forced to sit naked in painful positions for hours, and subjected to ice baths. Prosecutors also said Jackson-Jones tied him to chairs by his wrists and ankles, locked him in a closet, strangled him until he lost consciousness, and stomped on his genitals. The district attorney’s office said it planned to present the photos and videos as evidence if the case went to trial.

On September 30, Jackson-Jones pleaded guilty in Coweta County Superior Court to aggravated assault by strangulation, two counts of false imprisonment and 17 counts of first-degree cruelty to children. Judge Markette Baker accepted a negotiated plea agreement and sentenced her to 40 years in prison, followed by 20 years of probation. Prosecutors said they agreed to the deal partly to prevent the boy from having to testify about his abuse in court.

The district attorney’s office said it would have pursued a life sentence if state law allowed it for the crimes involved. However, prosecutors noted that a life sentence with the possibility of parole could have made Jackson-Jones eligible for parole consideration after 30 years. They said they want her to serve the full 40-year prison term.

Now 14, the boy has been placed in a stable home environment and is earning all A’s in school. He also addressed the court during the sentencing hearing, delivering a victim-impact statement about what he experienced. His escape and the investigation that followed brought years of alleged abuse to light, ultimately leading to his adoptive mother’s guilty plea and lengthy prison sentence.
