7-Year-Old Black Girl Stabbed to Death While Walking on Street in Broad Daylight

Edimari Hernandez Chacon

Nationwide — Edimari Hernandez Chacon, a 7-year-old African American girl from Chicago, Illinois, was stabbed to death in broad daylight while walking through the city’s Chatham neighborhood. Police said an unidentified woman ran up behind the child shortly before noon and stabbed her multiple times. She was taken to a nearby children’s hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Surveillance video showed Edimari walking hand-in-hand with another woman before the attack. After the stabbing, several people rushed toward the scene and tried to help the girl. Bystanders also managed to restrain the woman accused of attacking her until police arrived. The suspect was injured during the struggle and was taken to a local hospital for treatment before being placed in police custody, according to the New York Post.

Police have not said what led to the attack or identified a possible motive. Investigators are looking into why the woman approached Edimari and attacked her, particularly because the suspect and the child did not appear to know each other. The circumstances have left residents trying to understand how a young child could become the target of a violent attack while simply walking along the street.

Edimari and her family had recently moved to Chicago from Venezuela. People in the Chatham community expressed shock and sadness after learning about Edimari’s death. Resident Denesta Freeman said that she could not understand how a 7-year-old child could be stabbed. Another mother said the girl was the same age as her own daughter, making the death especially painful for her.

Alderwoman Michelle Harris also spoke about the stabbing and praised the bystanders who stepped in after the attack. She said their quick response helped hold the suspect and allowed emergency assistance to reach the scene. Harris also said children should not have to fear violence while walking through their neighborhoods.

The Chicago Police Department is continuing to investigate the case, including what may have motivated the stabbing and what charges the suspect could face. The attack comes as Chicago has seen a broader decline in violent crime in recent years. Police statistics show the city recorded 416 murders last year, the fewest in a year since 1965. Despite that decrease, violent crime remains a concern in the city, and the death of a 7-year-old girl has drawn renewed attention to safety in Chicago neighborhoods.
