Single Black Mom and Psychologist Who Opened 8 Offices in Two Months Challenges the “Single-Mother Deficit” Narrative

The founder of AViD Intellectual, Inc. and Momscapades spotlights a fuller story: women building stability, well-being, and wealth for their families

Nationwide — Single motherhood is often introduced as a story of what a family lacks. Dr. Candace Drummond wants to change the opening line. As a single Black mother of two, she is also a clinical psychologist, a licensed mental health counselor, a board-certified behavior analyst, and also the founder of AViD Intellectual, Inc. (named after her daughter) and Momscapades. She is using her professional work and lived experience to highlight what single mothers build: stable homes, opportunity, and wealth for their families, even while navigating real barriers and unequal burdens.

Through her company, AViD, Dr. Drummond works in psychological evaluations and mental-health screenings for children, adults, and families. She does this in partnership with ABA agencies, attorneys, private practice owners, large health networks, and government agencies to increase access, expand their offerings, and also improve their bottom line. Momscapades focuses on mothers’ well-being, self-care, and renewal. Currently developing a multi-state initiative with other health providers to provide real support to mothers as a “whole woman.”

Her message goes beyond celebrating resilience: it asks that the labor, financial decisions, entrepreneurship, community care, and long-range planning through which women build family stability and wealth be seen alongside the structural barriers they face. She comments, “We need to stop telling only the story of what single mothers lack. We are also building stability, opportunity, and wealth for our families, and we deserve to be seen in the fullness of that work.”

Dr. Drummond identifies eight new locations across Florida’s Panhandle as a major milestone in her work through AViD. The public NWF Health Connects directory currently lists AViD in Tallahassee, Pensacola, Panama City, Marianna, Crestview, Port St. Joe, Milton, and Miramar Beach. Families and referring organizations can search the directory by ZIP code at NWFHealthConnects.org. In addition, AViD has been a Vocational Rehabilitation provider since 2018, serving the community statewide with no-cost comprehensive psychological evaluations that assist with academic, occupational, and housing accommodations for those ages 16 to 65.

The community organizations that she names in connection with this work include Vocational Rehabilitation, DISC Village, Camelot Community Care, Children’s Home Society of Florida, Twin Oaks Juvenile Development, Anchorage Children’s Home, and First City Church.
