11-Year-Old Black Boy Who Called Police For Help Shot By Responding Officer

Nationwide — Aderrien Murry, an 11-year-old African American boy from Indianola, Mississippi, was critically injured after being shot by a police officer in his own home when he called 911 for help. He has since recovered and his family is still seeking answers and demanding justice.

Aderrien was shot in the chest by an Indianola Police Department officer who responded to a domestic disturbance call at the child’s home. Murry made the call as told by his mother, Nakala, who felt threatened when the father of one of her children came to their home in an agitated state at about 4am.

The officer, Sgt. Greg Capers, who is Black, reportedly had “had his gun drawn at the front door and asked those inside the home to come outside,” according to CNN.

As Aderrien obeyed and walked into the living room, he was shot in the chest. Her mother said Murry then kept asking, “‘Why did he shoot me? What did I do wrong?'”

Aderrien was rushed to the hospital where he had to stay for five days after sustaining serious injuries, including a collapsed lung, lacerated liver, and fractured ribs. He is now recovering at home.

Meanwhile, Officer Capers has been placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated. The young boy’s mother and her family’s lawyer Carlos Moore are demanding officials to take further action.

In a sit-in protest held at Indianola City Hall, his mother and others are calling to have Capers fired and charged with the shooting as well as to release the body-camera footage from the incident.

“We believe that the city and the officer should be liable to Aderrien Murray, for the damages they have caused,” Moore said.
