Nationwide — Ahmonique Miller, a 28-year-old African American mother from Las Vegas, died just hours after getting a Brazilian butt lift and liposuction in Miami, Florida, back in March. She passed away at an unlicensed recovery house after being given drugs not prescribed to her.
Miller flew to Miami with her sister, Kiera Barnes. Both planned to undergo cosmetic procedures at Avana Plastic Surgery. After her surgery, Miller checked into Keyla’s Recovery House, which police later identified as an illegal post-surgery facility, according to People.
Barnes told investigators that the recovery home’s owner, Keyla Oliver, gave Miller two Percocet pills from an unlabeled bottle and other muscle relaxers. She said Miller’s prescribed medication wasn’t ready, so they used what was available.
Miller was last seen resting between noon and 1 p.m. At around 9:30 p.m., staff noticed she hadn’t woken up. They found her face-down, unresponsive, and showing signs of rigor mortis. She was pronounced dead at 10:26 p.m.
The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death as acute combined drug toxicity. Oxycodone and bromazolam — a dangerous designer drug often found in fake pills — were found in her system. The report said this drug mix can slow breathing and increase the risk of death while asleep.
Oliver admitted she was not licensed to give medical care. Police are continuing to investigate.
Miller leaves behind a one-year-old daughter. Her mother said, “I have to remind myself every day that this is real… Ahmonique is not coming back.”
