Nationwide — Antwone Tate, a FedEx employee from Memphis, Tennessee, was arrested for stealing four gold bars from a package and pawning them. The stolen gold, worth more than $13,500, went missing while being processed at the FedEx Memphis Hub.
The package was scanned into the facility on May 14 but arrived at its destination with the gold bars missing. FedEx’s Loss Prevention team launched an internal investigation and flagged Tate as a suspect, according to Fox 13 Memphis.
Memphis police later found that Tate had been pawning large amounts of jewelry and precious metals at a local shop since January. A pawn ticket confirmed that he had pawned gold bars shortly after the theft.
Investigators believe Tate had direct access to the missing package while working at the hub. His transaction history and access to the package led to his arrest.
Tate was charged with theft of property valued between $10,000 and $60,000. He is currently in custody, and authorities say the investigation is still ongoing.
