Los Angeles, CA — The Black BeautyShop Health Foundation is a national grassroots organization that seeks to train and provide ongoing support to participating salons, their clients and surrounding neighborhoods. The goal is to bridge the gap in health disparities within communities across the country.

The mission is to work with community stakeholders to empower Women of Color to take an active role in their total health by understanding and being responsive to their immediate health care needs through education, screenings and promoting healthy living strategies in Black owned beauty shops.

As part of the initiative, The Black BeautyShop Health Foundation has established the “Beauty-n-Black Wellness Tour” taking vital information to the communities via beauty shops. Women are introduced, informed, educated, enlightened, and empowered regarding the impact of healthy choices on a woman’s total well-being.

In addition, The Black BeautyShop Health Foundation has created the “Beauty-n-Motion” 5k Walk Run 4 Life taking place Sunday, June 12th, 2016 at Exposition Park in Los Angeles, CA. This is the first stop of a 4 state tour. Other cities included are Atlanta, Georgia- August 28th; and Richmond, VA- September 25th, 2016.

All of the Walk/Run events are held on Sundays to encourage Beauty Salons & Barber Shops to walk with their clients or a day of health and wellness.

The Beauty-n-Motion 5k Walk Run 4 Life adds the Beauty-n-Black Wellness Tour to create a health, beauty and wellness day that begins with a 5k walk/run.

“Women are the health CEO of the family,” said Margo LaDrew, executive director of the Black BeautyShop Health Foundation. “Given that black women visit the salon an average of 2.5 times a month, the beauty shop is an ideal place to educate women and equip them with practical tools for improving their family’s health.” Beauty salons, health organizations, women, teens, men, businesses, nonprofits are invited to participate by creating a team to walk/run, joining a team, becoming a vendor, sponsoring the event or teams or donating items for gift bags or donate funds. In fact, this is great for salons and businesses to get info out about their establishment and non-profits can use the Beauty-n-Motion 5k Walk Run 4 Life as a fundraising opportunity.

Presenting sponsors for the Beauty-n-Motion 5k Walk Run 4 Life are Toyota, LA Care and KJLH. Supporting sponsors are The California Endowment, CareMore, Blue Shield of CA, and other community organizations.

Presently, the National Chair is Barbara T. Perkins, President & Co-Foundation of International Black Women’s Public Policy Institute & Founder of Sisters At The Well. The Local Chair in Los Angeles is Councilmember Curren D. Price, Jr., 9th District. The Co-Chair is Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson, 8th District.

The Black BeautyShop Health Foundation is excited to announce its’ new Health Ambassador Actress, Activist Sheryl Lee Ralph of The DIVA Foundation. Additional ambassadors will be announced soon and more are welcomed.
