Nationwide — Brittany Boltinhouse lost her Miss North Carolina USA 2026 title after the organization removed her over alleged racist posts and conduct concerns. The crown was later given to Myla Hadley, an African American woman, who will represent the state as the titleholder.
The Miss USA Organization announced on August 5 that Boltinhouse was no longer Miss North Carolina USA 2026, less than two months after she won the crown. The organization said the decision was reached with Boltinhouse, her state directors, and pageant officials.
Boltinhouse, who is from Beulaville, was crowned Miss North Carolina USA on June 28, but her reign ended after the organization reviewed concerns about her conduct. Miss USA CEO and chairman Thom Brodeur did not provide details about the alleged posts or actions that led to the decision.
However, Brodeur said the organization does not tolerate racism, homophobia, transphobia, or any language that takes away from a person’s dignity. He said titleholders are expected to represent the organization’s values both on and off the stage.
“When that standard is broken, the title cannot continue as though nothing happened,” Brodeur said, according to People. “What was brought to us was not a single moment. It reflected conduct over an extended period of time. That is why this outcome was reached, and I stand behind it without qualification.”
Although the organization stood by its decision, Brodeur also said Boltinhouse should not be defined only by the controversy. He said accountability should allow room for reflection and personal growth instead of becoming a reason to attack someone publicly.
Brodeur said he had reviewed Boltinhouse’s upcoming statement, which included an apology and acceptance of responsibility. He added that while an apology cannot undo the harm caused, meaningful change requires continued actions over time.
“I believe people can change,” he said. “I’m also quite aware that change is not a statement. It is a record. It is built over time, in the open, through conduct rather than apology alone.”
After Boltinhouse’s removal, the organization appointed Myla Hadley as Miss North Carolina USA 2026. Brodeur said Hadley has the organization’s full support and confidence as she takes over the role.
