Community Praises Black Grandpa Who Died Trying to Save His Granddaughter From Drowning in Lake

Chris Rushing

Nationwide — Chris Rushing, an African American grandfather from Covington, Louisiana, died after jumping into a lake to save his granddaughter, who had fallen into the water. He was pulled from Bayou Lacombe but later died from what authorities believe was an accidental drowning.

The rescue attempt happened on July 1 when Rushing saw his granddaughter struggling in the lake and rushed into the water to help her, witnesses said, according to the Independent. Another woman also entered the water and was able to bring the child to safety before emergency crews arrived.

Firefighters later recovered Rushing from the lake and took him to a nearby hospital, where he died shortly afterward. The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office said the final cause of death remains pending an autopsy.

Rushing worked with the City of Covington’s Department of Cultural Arts & Events and helped organize local events, including the city’s July 4 celebrations. City officials remembered him as someone who regularly worked to support his community.

His family said Rushing had a deep love for his grandchildren and would have made the same decision to protect them. They remembered him as a kind and caring person who was always willing to help others.

A GoFundMe campaign was created to help with funeral expenses and support plans to establish a nonprofit in Rushing’s name. It has so far raised over $7,000.

Community leaders also shared their memories of Rushing after his death. Covington Mayor Mark Johnson said Rushing would be remembered for his smile, kindness, and desire to serve others.

Councilman Jimmy Inman praised his dedication to the community, saying he spent his life trying to make a positive difference and showed true courage by risking his own life to save another.
