Doechii Makes History at 2025 Grammys with Best Rap Album Win

Doechii

Nationwide — Doechii made history at the 2025 Grammys by winning Best Rap Album, becoming only the third woman ever to win in this category since it was introduced in 1989. The 26-year-old rapper received the award for her 2024 mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal.

In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Doechii reflected on the hard work and dedication behind the album. “I put my heart and my soul into this mixtape,” she told the crowd, according to E! News. “I bared my life. I went through so much. I dedicated myself to sobriety, and God told me that I would be rewarded.”

She also took a moment to thank her mother, who joined her on stage, as well as her album’s producers and her label. Doechii then got emotional, saying, “There’s so much going on, what the f–k?” Realizing her slip-up, she quickly laughed and apologized.

Doechii, whose real name is Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon, also delivered an inspiring message to Black women, saying, “I know that there is some Black girl out there — so many black women out there — that are watching me right now, and I want to tell you: ‘You can do it.'”

“Anything is possible,” Doechii added. “Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you, tell you that you can’t be here, that you’re too dark, that you’re not smart enough or that you’re too dramatic or you’re too loud. You are exactly who you need to be and I am a testimony.

Her win comes almost 30 years since Lauryn Hill became the first woman to win the Best Rap Album Grammy with The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1999. Cardi B later became the first solo female artist to win in 2019.
