Gayle King Defends Blue Origin Space Mission Amid Controversy

Gayle King responds to space mission backlash

Nationwide — Gayle King has responded to criticism after joining Blue Origin’s NS-31 mission, an all-female spaceflight that happened on April 14. Though the 10-minute journey marked a historic milestone, it also sparked significant backlash.According to WBLS, celebrities like Olivia Munn and Emily Ratajkowski were among those who questioned the mission’s timing and relevance. Munn pointed to the growing cost of living, saying many people “can’t even afford eggs.” Ratajkowski called the flight “beyond parody,” citing its environmental impact.

In an interview with Extra, King expressed disappointment with the backlash. “I wish people would do more due diligence,” she said, urging the public to look into Blue Origin’s purpose beyond headlines.

King explained that the mission was not just a symbolic gesture. She said Blue Origin uses space research to help improve life on Earth, including managing waste and studying environmental systems.

King also challenged critics by asking, “Have you been?” She believes that experiencing space firsthand offers a more meaningful perspective on the mission’s value. She emphasized that the flight was not a “ride,” but a significant achievement that involved serious work from the crew.

She also pushed back against the word “ride,” which some used to describe the trip. “There was nothing frivolous about what we did,” King said. She asked critics, “Have you been?”—suggesting that firsthand experience offers better understanding.

Despite the controversy, King shared that the mission inspired many women, girls, and even men. She hopes it will encourage younger generations to explore careers in space.

King says she’s proud of what the crew accomplished and wants people to consider the mission’s long-term value.
