HBCU Grad Troy Gathers Keynotes Albany State University’s 2021 Social Work Conference

Reveals how the structure of the social work system has aided in the downfall of the African American family

Troy Gathers

Nationwide — On April 8, 2021, Albany State University hosted its annual Social Work Conference. Yearly, the university seeks out keynote speakers that will motivate and challenge the minds of their students. Troy Gathers was asked to expound upon the philosophy of his book titled Systematic Female Ratchet: It’s not the Sistas, It’s the System (ISBN-13: 978-1534832879).

Gathers addressed the University virtually and focused his speech on how the structure of the social work system aided in the downfall of the African American family. He believes that Americans of all backgrounds should be aware of the struggles African Americans have faced socially. “It’s important that everyone in the Social Work sector understands the historical significance of the past,” says Gathers.

Albany State University celebrated the entire week with events and special guests. The Social Work program is very healthy and the students are bright and vibrant. Gathers explained his experience at the Conference as “needed.” Moving forward, he is currently working on his 6th book release and looking forward to speaking at more colleges in the near future.
