Nationwide — Jade Riser, a 9-year-old African American girl from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, sadly passed away after she was critically injured in a shooting in the Harambee neighborhood. Her death has left her family seeking answers as police continue investigating the late-night attack.
Police said Jade was shot shortly before 11:30 p.m. on July 3 near Richards and Burleigh streets. Officers found her with severe injuries and rushed her to a hospital, where she remained in critical condition.
Jade’s family said she suffered severe injuries and had no brain function after the shooting. After days in the hospital, her relatives made the decision to remove her from life support on Tuesday, and she later died from her injuries.
Jade’s aunt, Miracle Cole, said the shooting deeply affected the family, including Jade’s siblings, who witnessed what happened.
“This was done in front of her siblings, other kids as well, so we have to get them therapy because they saw this happen. When she got shot, she tried to crawl to her older sister and tell her something was wrong, but she couldn’t speak,” Cole told WISN.
The family remembered Jade as a bright and loving child who enjoyed dancing, making TikTok videos with her sisters, and spending time with her loved ones. Cole said Jade was someone who easily stood out to those around her.
Police have not made any arrests and are still investigating what led to the shooting. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the case to come forward.
