Black Teen Who Received Scholarships to 113 Colleges Proudly Chooses an HBCU

Greensboro, NC — While some high school seniors are stressing about whether they have been accepted to college, Jasmine E. Harrison, a 17-year old senior from The Academy at Smith in Greensboro, North Carolina, had to consider hundreds of offers as she has been accepted to 113 out of the 115 colleges she applied to.

“At first I could not believe it, but then I was like, ‘Wow.’ I felt honored,” Harrison told The New York Times.

What’s more, three colleges even offered her full-ride scholarships. All in all, she was awarded over $4.5 million in scholarships.

Harrison, however, who will graduate with a 4.0 GPA later this month, proudly decided to attend Bennett College, an HBCU (which stands for Historically Black Colleges and Universities), where she was awarded a full scholarship to cover the $28,000 in annual tuition fees.

“It was overwhelming at first because there were so many options,” she said. “I could go anywhere, and discover who I am.”

Using only $135, Harrison managed to apply to all those schools. She took advantage of the online application tools that would make it easy to apply to numerous universities at once such as Common Application and Common Black College Application. She also applied through the help of North Carolina’s free college application week.

Harrison said she wants to study Biology and eventually work as a neonatal intensive care unit nurse.
