Nationwide — Jy’Kavien Wright, an 18-year-old African American teen from Alabama, was shot and killed in Talladega just two weeks after graduating from high school. Police have opened a homicide investigation as they work to identify the suspect or suspects involved.
Talladega Police Department said officers responded around 2:24 a.m. on May 31 after reports of a gunshot victim in the 600 block of McAlpine Street. When they arrived at the scene, they found a young man lying on a sidewalk.
According to ABC 3340, officers reported that the victim had suffered a single gunshot wound to the head. They immediately started life-saving efforts while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.
Paramedics from Sylacauga Ambulance reached the scene shortly after, but the victim was pronounced dead on site. Police later confirmed the victim was Jy’Kavien Wright of Talladega.
Authorities said Wright had recently graduated from Talladega High School as part of the Class of 2026, just days before the shooting. His death has shocked the local school community.
Investigators from the Talladega Police Department worked with crime scene technicians from the Jacksonville State University Center for Applied Forensics to process evidence from the scene. The Talladega County Coroner’s Office also responded and took custody of the body.
CrimeStoppers 215STOP is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. Officials said the investigation is still in its early stages and no suspect has been identified.
The body will be sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for an autopsy as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities continue to ask anyone with information to come forward.
