Nationwide — Kaisa Leigh Miller, a 4-year-old African American girl from Mexia, Texas, died after a year-long battle with cancer that started when she was 3 years old. Her family and community came together to honor her life at a church service filled with grief and support.
She was first diagnosed with cancer at age 3 and went through brain surgery followed by radiation treatment. Her health continued to decline over time, and she died on May 12 after the long illness, according to KWTX.
Her funeral was held on Sunday at Northcrest Church of Christ in Mexia. The church was filled with mourners, and every pew was taken. Many people wore pink and purple to honor her memory and show support for her family.
During the service, church leaders spoke about the pain the family endured and the strength they showed throughout the year. Overseer Roosevelt Johnson said in a prayer, “God this family is hurting in a way that words cannot fully explain, the pain of losing a child is a pain that cuts deep.”
Elder Rodney Jackson also spoke about the parents’ strength, saying, “They are two of the strongest young people I have ever met, to go through what they went through and to go through it for so long.”
Kaisa’s grandfather addressed her parents during the service and offered words of encouragement. He said, “Nights will come and days will come when it will get hard, but you keep being strong.”
Other family members also shared tributes. Her great-great-grandfather described her as a fighter. Her aunt said she believed Kaisa was at peace and added that she would always be loved and remembered.
At the end of the service, mourners gathered for a final goodbye as Kaisa’s small pink casket was opened one last time before her burial. A closing prayer asked for comfort and strength for the family as they continue to grieve.
