Nationwide — Khu’meri Williams, a 6-year-old African American boy from Stonecrest, Georgia, has finally received a heart transplant after spending 212 days at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. He is now recovering at home while continuing ongoing medical care.
His family first became concerned shortly after he started kindergarten. He began losing energy, had trouble eating, and quickly dropped weight over a few weeks. His symptoms worsened fast, prompting urgent medical attention.
Doctors at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta diagnosed him with severe heart failure. His heart was only pumping a fraction of the blood his body needed. He was admitted to the ICU and placed on the heart transplant waiting list.
According to Atlanta News First, Khu’meri remained in the hospital for around 200 days as he waited for a donor heart. During his stay, he built relationships with hospital staff and even met Sonic the Hedgehog, a character he often talked about.
On day 200, his mother received the call that a suitable heart had been found. Two days later, on day 202, he underwent a successful transplant surgery. He was discharged on day 212 and had recently celebrated his sixth birthday on April 5.
At home, Khu’meri continues recovery with lifelong medication and regular monitoring. His mother said he has a long chest scar from surgery and must follow strict health guidelines. His care plan also includes limits on pets, allowing only cats, dogs, or fish.
Khu’meri has returned to everyday life and is finishing kindergarten. He is adjusting to his new routine and has even been thinking about getting a pet fish as he continues recovering after his long hospital stay.
