Nationwide — LaeTania Richardson, an African American woman and entrepreneur, gained attention after a video showed a white woman questioning her presence at a Los Angeles opera performance. She calmly responded while sharing how she has experienced subtle racism in spaces where people assume she does not belong.
Richardson attended the opera dressed for the occasion and sat in the orchestra section, one of the most sought-after areas in the venue. While waiting for the performance to begin, the woman sitting beside her asked if she was famous.
Richardson replied that she was “famously sitting here about to enjoy the opera.” The woman then asked if it was Richardson’s first time attending an opera.
Instead of letting the questions affect her experience, Richardson used the moment to talk about her passion for the art form. She explained that she regularly attends opera performances around the world, including trips to Italy, where she also learned to speak Italian.
The conversation continued as the woman mentioned knowing an opera supporter with front-row tickets. Richardson shared the exchange in a video posted online, captioning it “when you get carded at 52.” The video later gained millions of views.
Many viewers praised Richardson for the way she handled the interaction. Some said the conversation reflected the subtle assumptions and microaggressions Black people often experience in spaces where they are sometimes treated as if they do not belong.
According to Atlanta Black Star, Richardson said she shared the video to highlight a type of racism that can often be overlooked. She explained that similar moments have happened to her in places such as luxury stores, first-class flights, coffee shops, and cultural events.
Despite those experiences, Richardson said she continues to enjoy the activities she loves and refuses to let other people’s assumptions stop her from living a full life.
