Nationwide — Two African American men, Major Hurt, 40, and Martez Rodgers, 32, from Memphis, Tennessee, have been arrested and charged after allegedly beating and choking a UPS delivery driver over an undelivered package. The assault left the driver unconscious.
According to WLBT, the incident happened on January 28th in Whitehaven, when the UPS driver noticed a car following him while making deliveries. When he stopped on Hancock Drive, the car blocked him from leaving.
Hurt and Rodgers got out and confronted the driver. Rodgers, armed with a handgun, demanded a package that was supposed to be delivered to his home on Goodhaven Drive. Rodgers then allegedly beat him in the head while Hurt choked him. The victim lost consciousness during the assault.
Police arrived and found the driver with severe head and face injuries, and his uniform soaked in blood. He was taken to Regional One Hospital for treatment, where he received stitches for his wounds.
Investigators identified Rodgers through his delivery address, linking him to the attack. Hurt was later connected due to his connection with Rodgers.
Both men face charges of aggravated assault and attempted first-degree murder. They were booked into Shelby County Jail on Sunday and are set to appear in court on Tuesday.
