15-Year-Old Black Teen Faces Four Charges in Shooting That Seriously Injured a Woman

Martavious Grandberry

Nationwide — Martavious Grandberry, a 15-year-old African American teen from Yazoo City, Mississippi, faces four charges after police arrested him in connection with a shooting that injured 20-year-old Vaniyah Woodbury. Investigators said someone fired multiple shots at a car carrying Woodbury and two other women as they tried to leave a home.

Yazoo City police began investigating on Sunday, Oct. 18, after learning that a woman with a gunshot wound had arrived at Baptist Memorial Hospital. Woodbury had been shot in the lower-left side of her back. Hospital staff treated her before transferring her to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson for further care.

According to WLBT, investigators determined that Woodbury had argued verbally with her boyfriend at a home on Leach Street before the shooting. The argument reportedly happened before she and two other women attempted to leave the property in a gray Honda Accord. Authorities said an individual allegedly fired multiple shots at the vehicle as the women were leaving. Officials have not released further details about what led to the confrontation or whether the suspect knew the people inside the car.

The gunfire left visible damage to the Honda Accord, including apparent bullet strikes on its windows and passenger-side door. Police recovered the vehicle as part of their investigation. The damage suggests that several shots struck the car, although authorities have not provided a full account of how many rounds were fired or whether anyone else was targeted during the incident.

Authorities later arrested Grandberry in connection with the incident. He faces three counts of aggravated assault and one count of shooting into a motor vehicle. The aggravated assault charges involve the reported attack on the women, while the remaining charge concerns the gunfire directed at the vehicle. Police have not released further details about the evidence supporting the charges.

Grandberry’s bond was set at $175,000. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not released additional information about the case. Police also have not provided an update on Woodbury’s condition following her transfer to the Jackson Medical Center.
