Nationwide — McKenzie Kerry has made history by winning the Miss Iowa USA pageant, becoming only the second Black woman to win the title in over 70 years. At 25 years old, Kerry finally achieved this milestone after three years of competing.
Kerry’s journey to the crown involved months of preparation, including finding the perfect wardrobe. For her final look, she wore gold mesh hoop earrings designed by Aminna Taylor, a local jeweler who started her business just two years ago. Kerry’s choice to wear her earrings was a significant boost for Taylor’s small business.
Moving forward, Kerry aims to use her platform to support small businesses and uplift Black women, especially those who are making strides in their communities.
“Being able to support the community is awesome but also being able to support a Black woman who is hustling and grinding who has truly created an incredible product is amazing too,” Kerry said. “I think we all have the power to elevate the things we care about and to bring other people with us.”
Looking ahead, Kerry will represent Iowa at the Miss USA pageant in Hollywood, California this August.
