Gas Station Clerk Who Shot Black Man Over Beef Jerky Sentenced to Decades in Prison

Moad Mohamed Al-Gaham and Anthony McNary

Nationwide — Moad Mohamed Al-Gaham, a former gas station clerk in Detroit, Michigan, has been sentenced to 20 to 50 years in prison after shooting and killing Anthony McNary during an argument over beef jerky in 2023.

The shooting happened in 2023 at an ExxonMobil gas station on Vernor Highway. Al-Gaham was working behind the counter when McNary reportedly picked up beef jerky and placed it in his pocket. The two got into an argument, and Al-Gaham took the jerky from McNary and returned it to the shelf.

McNary then tried to pay for the snack, but Al-Gaham refused and kicked him out of the store. He manually locked the door to stop McNary from coming back in.

Surveillance footage showed McNary pacing outside and approaching the door several times. Al-Gaham eventually raised a gun from inside the store and shot McNary in the head through the window. The gun was not registered.

McNary died at the scene. Al-Gaham was arrested and later found guilty of second-degree murder. On June 27, 2025, a judge sentenced him to 20 to 50 years in a Michigan correctional facility.

McNary’s family said the sentence brought them a small sense of justice. “Nothing will bring our Anthony back to us, and we miss him so much,” they shared in a statement.

Fieger Law, representing the McNary family, also announced a $100 million lawsuit against ExxonMobil. The firm accused the company of failing to ensure safety at its locations, claiming McNary’s death was part of a pattern of violence by gas station employees.
