Charleston, SCINSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity publication and website in higher education, has recognized the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) as a 2020 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award recipient and a 2020 Diversity Champion. This is the fourth consecutive year that MUSC earned a place among the HEED honorees and the third consecutive year that MUSC was named a Diversity Champion.

“MUSC is honored to be among the distinguished 2020 health professions institutions selected for notable strategies and outcomes in diversity, equity and inclusion. I also acknowledge the many contributions of the entire MUSC community for all they do to contribute to this honor,” said Willette Burnham-Williams, Ph.D., chief equity officer and Title IX coordinator for MUSC.

As a recipient of the annual HEED Award, a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion across their campuses, MUSC is featured in the November HEED Award issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. This year 89 other award recipients are also included in the issue.

INSIGHT Into Diversity also recognizes selected institutions — those that rank in the top tier of HEED Award recipients — as Diversity Champions. These institutions exemplify an unyielding commitment to diversity and inclusion throughout their campus communities, across academic programs, and at the highest administrative levels. Known for visionary leadership, Diversity Champions are institutions that serve as role models and set the standard for thousands of other U.S. college campuses striving for inclusive excellence.

“MUSC is a visionary leader among institutions of higher education striving for inclusive excellence throughout their campus,” said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “As a Diversity Champion school, MUSC exceeds everyday expectations by developing successful strategies and programs that serve as models of excellence for other higher education institutions.”
